Top 10 of 2015

That's right, peoples. It's that time again. Joe Moore's favorite flicks of the year! As per usual, there are a few movies I failed to catch. Most of them are of the Oscar bait variety. So I doubt anyone reading this list has seen them either. Here we go!

RUNNERS-UP

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl - I love coming-of-age flicks. There weren't too many of those this year, but this excellent adaptation of a terrific book is the best of the bunch. The three lead performances are great. It's clear that director Gomez-Rejon (of "American Horror Story" fame) is a true movie fan. The short films the leads make are hilarious.

The Peanuts Movie - I LOVE the Peanuts. Always have. This movie may stretch its thin plot a little far, but it's a great trip down memory lane. I also appreciated how (except for the modern pop songs) the characters are still presented in a very timeless world. Because that's exactly what the Peanuts are.

DA TURD

Unfriended - I lot of critics and horror fans gave this flick high marks. I don't get it. It's boring, its characters are obnoxious teenage brats, and even at 88 minutes it's too long. No. Never again.

and now THE TOP 10

10) Love & Mercy - I've always loved the Beach Boys' music. I never knew Brian Wilson's life story so this biopic is actually rather fascinating. Paul Dano and John Cusack seem like an odd pair to play young/old versions of the same guy, but the continuity in their masserisms is impeccable. Elizabeth Banks hits a career best as the woman Wilson falls for in the 80s.

9) Ex Machina - Some people might find this sci-fi flick slight with its singular location and minimal characters. I think it's genius. The story tells so much with so little. All the actors are great. Isaac stands out as Ava's creator, but this is Vikander's movie all the way. She's brilliant.

8) Trainwreck - A lot of people say Judd Apatow's movies are overlong, and there is some truth there. A good 15 minutes could've been chopped off this flick, but it's still a lot of fun. Apatow and Schumer work wonders together. Schumer herself is hilarious. She figures out how to give an unlikable character a heart. Her chemistry with Bill Hader is so on. If you need a good laugh check it out. It's crude and wonderful and hilarious.

7) Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens - I still can't believe I've seen this movie. THIS is what fans wanted when The Phantom Menace was released back in '99. Sure the plot is kinda recycled from the original, but who cares when the movie has this much action, heart, and humor. Can't wait for Episode VIII!

6) The Martian - I feel like a lot of people are forgetting about this astounding film toward the end of the year. That's too bad because it really is incredible. It's director Ridley Scott's best film in years, and the ensemble cast is amazing. Who knew Matt Damon could be funny?! Terrific film.

5) It Follows - When I first walked out of the theater, I complained that it wasn't scary enough. I was an idiot. This is the best teenage fright flick in years. It's a haunting thrill ride that definitely sticks with you long after you watch it. If you love horror at all, this is a must-see.

4) Inside Out - While not quite on par with Wall-E and Up, this animated tale is Pixar's finest work in a while. The story itself is extremely relatable. As with any of Pixar's films it's also very heartfelt. Be prepared with a box of tissues, folks. You have been warned.

3) Room - What an incredible film. It's thrilling, heartfelt, and suspenseful at times. The bond between mother and son is a strong one, and the two leads really knock it out of the park. Newcomer Tremblay is quite a find, and Brie Larson is perfection. If she doesn't win the Best Actress Oscar, something is wrong with the world.

2) Spotlight - While political thrillers aren't my favorite, I do love a good investigative thirller. That's exactly what this film is. Writer/director Tom McCarthy really did his homework for this film, and it shows. It's a gripping piece of work with a terrific ensemble cast. Definitely the best of the year. Except for...

1) Mad Max: Fury Road - As if there would be a different #1 choice. What can I say about this heartpounding, action-packed genre piece of work that hasn't already been said? Director George Miller returns to the series that put him on the map, and the result is not only the best action film of the year but one of the best films in years. Now THAT is saying something. Tom Hardy makes for a great Mel Gibson replacement, but this movie belongs to Charlize Theron's Furiosa, who ranks right up with Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor as one of the best action heroines on film.

Okay that's it! If you haven't checked out any of the aforementioned films I urge you to do so as soon as possible. They really are the best of the best. Joe Moore out!

That Small Arthouse Flick

I cannot believe it is a week before Christmas. Where has this year gone? Where has December gone?! This is utterly ridiculous.

That being said... HAPPY STAR WARS DAY!!!

As most of you surely know (and you better!) today is the day Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens is released into theaters. Unless you count the advance screenings last night. Which would make sense because most of you lucky ducks reading were able to attend last night. But anyway! Today is the official release date!

I'd like to say I'm excited to see a brand new Star Wars film for the first time, but my generation did get the prequels (if that even counts). I remember when The Phantom Menace was released back in 1999. It was a huge deal. Then everybody hated it. Except kids. I was 13 years old. I will admit even I liked it at first. Nowdays the only cool parts are John Williams's score, Liam Neeson, and the lightsaber battle with Darth Maul. So yeah. Not so great.

But now NOW! there's a whole new film for fans all over the world to geek out about and for a new generation to discover. It's basically the most exciting thing EVER! I wish I could see it today, but alas, work summons me. I hope I can see it next week when I'm visiting mi familia.

Oh yeah! I get to go home for Christmas! Pretty exciting stuff right? The last time I celebrated the holiday at home with my family was... 2006. So yeah. It's been a while. It would also be awesome if we were able to fit in time to see the new movie. You see, when I was growing up it was an annual Moore Family tradition to sit down and watch the original trilogy. Not on Christmas Day of course. We waited until the week after leading up to the new year. But I remember those times very fondly so I hope we're able to see the new movie togther (*hint hint* purchase the tickets familia *wink wink*).

So why are you still reading this? Go see the movie! And if you're already in the theater SHAME ON YOU! What is wrong with you?! Put your phone down! It's STAR WARS!!!

Underrated Awesomeness

Before the obligatory Christmas posts commence I feel I must share my feelings on two little seen movies released earlier this year. They are 1) The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and 2) Love & Mercy. The good news is both are currently available to rent so it's really easy to retrieve them immediately after reading this!

So without further ado...

1) The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

When I first saw the trailers for this movie I was underwhelmed. Hence why I didn't see it in theaters. After some badgering from a couple of friends and a lot from my mother (thank you btdubs), I decided to check it out. This is easily one of the more fun flicks to be released this year. If you love a good spy caper this is a must-see.

It's definitely a departure from Guy Ritchie's other films, with this feeling more in common with the better Roger Moore "Bond" outings and a pinch of Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's 11 (especially the soundtrack). Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, and Alicia Vikander all have fun with their roles. Cavill and Hammer share a nice chemistry while their characters are constantly bickering and teamed up against their will. Vikander is having a great year, and her performance here is no exception.

The only downside is there's not really a standout villain here. Elizabeth Debicki tries, but her character is far too underwritten to leave much of an impression. That doesn't matter though because the movie is such a blast you won't think about the negatives until afterward. Definitely recommended!

2) Love & Mercy

I remember reading a lot about Brian Wilson's story when this film was released earlier this summer. For some reason I never checked it out... until now. This biopic does an amazing job alternating between the 60s (Wilson writing "Pet Sounds"/struggling with the Beach Boys' successive album) and the 80s (Wilson dealing with his quack doctor while rediscovering his love for music AND falling for the love of his life). While it does feel slightly disjointed sometimes, it's never less than mesmerizing.

The performances from the leads are extremely compelling. Paul Dano and John Cusack may feel like an odd pair to be playing the same character, but there's a nice continuity in both nailing Wilson's mannerisms. Dano in particular is wonderful when in the studio recording tracks for "Pet Sounds". Elizabeth Banks has never been better as Melinda, the car saleswoman whom Wilson falls in love with in the 80s. She gives her character a fire and tenacity while also being sharing a wonderful chemistry with Cusack. I hope she gets some love come award time. Paul Giamatti is great as the outrageous Dr. Landy. He's over-the-top without sliding into caricature, helping you understand the doctor's questionable motives.

This flick also has a great soundtrack. I've been listening to The Beach Boys' music all morning. I've always loved them, but now I have a greater appreciation from a behind-the-scenes standpoint. Even if you don't love their music, this film pulls you in and never lets go. Check it out!

Okay that's enough for now methinks. Get back to listening to Christmas music!

Making Moore Magic

It's officially December. This is nuts. Where has this past year gone? I can't believe it's flown by so quickly. I'd complain some more but... it's Christmas! CHRISTMAS!!! I'm so frikkin excited like Aunt Sue from SNL. Or like Pee-Wee in his Christmas special. Or like Buddy the elf.

This may sound like blasphemy to many, but Christmas is not my favorite holiday. If you couldn't tell by my October posts, that title belongs to Halloween. However Christmas does come in a very close second. I celebrate both holidays their entire respective months. I listen to the holiday music absolutely nonstop. I get dressed up for both, though Halloween arguably (read: definitely) moreso. My point is, I love Christmas almost as much. Get used to it.

This first week in December is particularly exciting because I am going to have Moore fun than you will. That's right. The Moores are in town this week to celebrate Christmas at the Disney parks. That means Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, Candlelight Processional, and of course the Osborne Lights!!! All with my favorite people in the world.

I'm excited to attend the Christmas Party. This year is my second time attending. Yup. Second ever. Because I used to perform in the Christmas parade every year of my life. But not anymore! I saw Candlelight Processional last night for only the second time ever. That presentation is so beautiful to behold. The music is absolutely wonderful, and I found myself choking up a little bit. Me! Joe Moore! Oh also some Neil somebody or other was hosting. He was pretty cool (read: NPH was the guest host and I'm STILL containing my excitement that I was mere feet away from his awesomeness).

My absolute favorite part of Christmas at Disney is the Osborne family's Spectacle of Dancing Lights. IT'S MY FAVORITE!!! Alas due to the upcoming (and much-needed) Hollywood Studios makeover, this year will be my last time watching those Lights dance. Of course I am extremely emotional about this. The Lights has been my favorite since 2008. They are the only reason I will drive out of my way to attend the parks in December (like last Saturday when I was redirected three different times to find a place to park). If you want to know just how much I love the Lights, please feel free to peruse this article from five years ago

...are we done? Okay moving on!

I have already visited once this year with my pff bff Andie and my main man Big B. They were with me my first time ever seeing the Lights. It was a blast but also very bittersweet. Like the end of an era. Tomorrow I'll be visiting for the last time with my family, and I will probably sob uncontrollably. Me! Joe Moore! I'll be okay though. Osborne Lights, I just wanna thank you for all the fun and merriment throughout the years. I'm gonna miss you like WHOA.

So there you have it. I hope everyone has a very merry December. I'll be back for another post around Christmas Day. Until then, peace!
